Cost – 30.00 Euro per person (May 2024)
Parking and Access – Ghent is largely traffic free. Only public transport and taxis are allowed to drive in the centre. We arrived by train, then took a tram to the centre.
There was a small step into the café. However, there were steps up to the toilets.

Background – The last port on our cruise was Zeebrugge. We have been there many times before, and have visited both Blankenburge and Bruges on several occasions. However, we had never visited Ghent.
Ghent is a lovely town. Like a bigger Brugges, but with a lot more modern buildings around the outside. There are a lot of very pretty, older buildings in the central area. In Choc is found right next to the Castle of the Counts.

My apologies for the colour of the photos, we were sitting under an orange lightbulb!

Options Available – There were no options for this Afternoon Tea.
Contents (per person) – Three finger rolls (smoked salmon, cucumber and Coronation chicken. Two small blueberry scones sitting in a pool of strawberry coulis. Four tiny blobs of clotted cream, and some berries. Ten small items between the two of us, including some chocolates. A glass of Cava and a pot of tea.
Comments – The café was pretty busy when we arrived. We were shown through to a table reserved for us, near the back of the café.
The table was laid with pretty plates with a bird on them. There was also a glass vase containing some red tulips.

We were offered a glass of Cava, but asked for water instead. We were each brought a bottle of sparkling water. Not my favourite, but it would do!

We were then offered an Earl Grey tea. Again, this is definitely not our favourite! We requested English breakfast instead. It arrived along with a wrapped chocolate, and a mini waffle biscuit. We asked for some milk, and were brought a tiny jug of hot milk each!

The Afternoon Tea arrived on a three-tier cake stand with pretty round plates.

The sandwiches were all a little bit different to the usual, in that they were small finger rolls, each held together with a cocktail stick. They were all well filled, fresh and very good.

The scones had not been warmed up. They were small, blueberry scones, which were really nice. They were only small, but were fresh, and tasty.
Slightly bizarrely, the scones were sitting in a pool of strawberry coulis. Also in the coulis, were several berries (strawberry, red currants, blueberry and blackberries), and four very small blobs of clotted cream!

We ended up, sort of scooping some coulis onto the scones, which was not easy, as it was pretty runny. Then topping that with half a clotted cream blob on each half of scone. It worked well, though there was nowhere near enough cream. Even for the small scones.
The cakes were sitting in cocoa powder. There were ten different, small items between the two of us. All were interesting and were tasty. However, as usual, it was very irritating not to have the same for each of us. I particularly enjoyed the chocolates that were included!

Service was alright, but was a bit sparce. Luckily, we didn’t really need anything.
