Cost – £26.50 for two people (Mar 2017)

Background – We spotted Fanny Anne’s Tea Room during a previous visit to Long Melford and had decided it would be a good place to try one day. How right we were!

The tea room is situated on the long main street that runs through the middle of the pretty village of Long Melford. It has an interesting décor in mainly silver and black with a large mural painted on one wall. The tables were laid with sugar pourers and a bell amongst other things.

The waitresses were all dressed up in black with white pinafores and there was a high counter containing many delicious looking homemade cakes and slices.

Contents – Four triangular sandwiches each (your choice of filling from a list of four. We chose egg mayonnaise and Coronation chicken) plus some lettuce and tomato. A large fruit scone, a mini jar of strawberry jam between us (!) and an eggcup of clotted cream each. A cupcake, a square of caramel sponge and a triangle of white chocolate and cranberry fridge cake. The tea was made with loose leaf tea from a choice of tea types.

Comments – We were shown to a table in the main room of the busy tea room near the counter. On sitting down we were immediately asked for our choices of tea and served with a pot. We were then asked for our choices of sandwiches for the Tea. There was a list of four but my husband had spotted that Coronation chicken was available elsewhere on the menu, so he asked if he could have that instead. I chose egg mayonnaise from the list.

The sandwiches were very generously filled and very tasty. It is always good to have some lettuce and tomato in addition to the sandwiches.

Unfortunately there was only one fruit scone left when we arrived so my husband chose a cheese scone instead. The scones were large, homemade and fresh. My fruit scone was made with blueberries instead of the usual dried fruit. It was absolutely delicious. My husband’s cheese scone was very good too but he insisted on still having jam and cream on it!! We had only been given one mini jar of jam, which given the size of the scones, was nowhere near enough. We asked for a second jar which we received. There was about the right amount of clotted cream.

The cakes were prettily decorated with sparkly topping. One was yellow and the other was pink. There was not too much topping and they were fresh and not dry. The square of caramel cake was moist and delicious but best of all was the white chocolate and cranberry fridge cake. This was so good we took a piece each home with us!

The tea was made with loose leaves and was a good strength. We asked for a refill and were given it.

Service was reasonable but we had a problem getting attention at one point as the staff were very busy.
