Cost – £12.95 (May 2017)
Background – I had never visited the centre of the picturesque town of Saffron Walden before. What a pretty town it is. There are lots of historic buildings and a variety of shops. It is definitely a place I would like to return to. Parking wasn’t easy until we found the large car park near to the golf club. It was only a short walk from there to the centre and we soon found the Tea Amo Tea Room.
Tea Amo is on the end of a short street just off the main streets of the town. There were four tables set up outside with parasols plus six tables inside the small Tea Room.
There is a counter with several delicious looking cakes on it and a small preparation area behind. The main kitchen is found upstairs.
Contents – Four finger sandwiches each (your choice from the menu – currently about eight varieties. We chose cheddar and chutney and ham and chutney), One fairly large fruit scone, a mini cup of strawberry jam and a mini cup of clotted cream. A large slice of your choice of cakes from the counter (we both chose salted caramel sponge cake). The tea was made with loose tea leaves.
Comments – We were seated inside the small, nicely decorated, tea room. There were some tables outside but they were all full when we arrived. It was a very warm day.
The tea arrived quickly in a large patterned ceramic teapot. The rest of the Afternoon Tea arrived a short while later. It was presented on a three-tier cake stand with mixed vintage china plates.
The sandwiches were freshly made (we could see them being made behind the counter) and were well filled. We both chose brown bread for our sandwiches. It was good bread! As you are asked to choose one filling each we were able to choose two different fillings and share them. They were very tasty.
The scones were fresh and of quite a generous size. We were asked to choose between fruit or plain and we both chose fruit. There was plenty of fruit in the scones and they were delicious. There was enough of both jam and clotted cream.
Finally, we had a large slice of delicious salted caramel sponge cake. It was very fresh and quite light. All of the cakes were made by the staff of the café.
The tea was of just the right strength for us both and we were able to get three cups each out of the large tea pot. We didn’t ask for a refill but my husband had a glass of tap water as well as it was a very warm day.
Service was good without being intrusive.
