Cost – £15.00 per person (June 2020)
Parking and Access – This tea was taken in the inside area of the venue. There is one small step to enter the building. The toilet is up a flight of stairs with no alternative access. There is on-street parking available in front of the venue.
Background – We last visited and reviewed Afternoon Tea at Teacake tea rooms in Shepreth in June 2016. We had enjoyed that Tea, so I was delighted when I discovered that Teacake were doing their Afternoon Teas for collection only, on Sundays.
I contacted Teacake by phone and booked to collect Tea for two the next Sunday. Payment was either cash on collection or by BACS to their account.
Contents per person – Four rectangular sandwiches (cheese and ham, cucumber and cream cheese, egg mayonnaise and smoked salmon and cream cheese) and a small sausage roll. One medium sized plain scone and one medium sized fruit scone, a mini tub of strawberry jam and a tub of Rodda’s clotted cream. A macaroon, a mini fresh fruit tartlette, a mini éclair, a small square of chocolate Brownie, a piece of coffee cake and a mini sponge cake. A napkin was also included in each box. Drink was provided by ourselves.
Options available – No options were available for this Tea
Comments – We arranged to pick up our Afternoon Teas on Sunday morning. We drove out to the tea room and followed instructions to collect from the rear of the premises. We were given two cardboard cake boxes, each of which contained a complete Tea.
I have based my presentation score on the way the package was presented in the box. It was very good.
Unusually, we did not make any tea to drink with our Tea. We had a bottle of Sicilian Lemonade between us instead. I have scored the beverage as 2.0 to keep in line with other scores for delivered Afternoon Teas.
Once again, we served the Afternoon Tea on our two-tier circular cake stand with slate platters.
The sandwiches were included with the Afternoon Tea. They were all adequately well filled, were tasty and very fresh. There was a mix of white and brown bread. There was also a small sausage roll with the savoury items, which was very tasty
Our scones were warmed up in the oven before serving them. They were all medium sized. The Tea included one fruit scone and one plain each. They were really tasty and very fresh. We enjoyed them very much.
The strawberry jam was in a small plastic pot each, which we thought was a good idea. However, there was not enough for two scones each so we supplemented the jam with some from a previous delivered Tea. The jam provided was tasty, there just wasn’t enough for us.
The clotted cream was a small pot of Rodda’s clotted cream. There was enough for both scones without having to be too mean!
We were really pleased to see a selection of six cakes in each box. There was a good variety of items, some of which were particularly good. The coffee cake was delicious and was a good size. The mini sandwich cakes were both excellent but we had a different one each. We received one lemon sponge
and one chocolate.
Finally, the square of chocolate brownie was particularly yummy. Unfortunately, there was only a small square each! How cruel!! I notice Teacake also does a takeaway box of brownies. We may have to try that very soon!
As usual, I have based my service score on the service we received, which was friendly and pleasant, whilst also being efficient.
