Cost – £13.95 (Nov 2015)

Background – This is one of my favourite afternoon tea venues.

The Folly tea room can be found in the beautiful North Norfolk town of Holt. It can be found down an alley near to the main pay and display car park. It is well worth searching for this delightful tea room. It is very popular so it might be worth booking ahead at busy times.

The tea room itself is not large. It is the last building down the alley and has a garden to the back where you can also eat on dry days. The tables all have plastic lace table clothes on them and fresh flowers. They are laid with a linen napkin in a pretty napkin ring. Tea is served in teapots covered with colourful knitted teapot cosies. There is a huge choice of wonderful looking (and tasting) cakes and other sweet delights available. Savoury options are also available, including a Gentlemans Afternoon Tea (which we will have to try one day soon!)

We have visited The Folly on several occasions and had afternoon tea. The contents vary each time but the quantity and quality is always the same.

This is a really generous afternoon tea and I recommend leaving lots of space for it!!

Contents – 4 finger sandwiches (egg mayonnaise, ham and chutney, salmon and cream cheese, cucumber).  1 fruit scone, 1 plain scone, a bowl each of strawberry jam and of clotted cream. One between two of each of chocolate brownie, pink iced Victoria sponge, Victoria sponge, Pavlova with clotted cream, coffee and walnut cake, mini fruit flan with lemon curd, mini iced cherry Bakewell and a piece of shortbread. Tea was loose leaf but was contained in a cage in the teapot.

Comments – We were sat at a small table set with pretty, non-matching china, napkins in a napkin ring and red roses in a china vase, in the conservatory area.

We were first brought a china teapot with a knitted tea cosy on and a jug of milk.

The Tea arrived on a pretty three tier cake stand with a separate plate with the cream and jam bowls on it. The whole lot was decorated with pretty fresh flower heads.

When we ordered our Afternoon Tea (The Full Folly) we were asked if there was anything we didn’t like in sandwiches from the long list in the menu. The sandwiches that arrived were mixed fillings, two of each (ie one of each each). Some were on white bread and some on brown. They were freshly made and tasty and generally very well filled.

The scones were a good size and it was nice to get both fruit and plain. They were fresh, well cooked and warm.

Folly6

There was plenty of strawberry jam and clotted cream.

The cakes were very tasty and fresh. There was a lovely variety of cakes and plenty of them. However, there was only one of each of most of the items to share between the two of us.

Unfortunately this time the cakes beat us and we had to take some home with us to share later. The waitress packed the left over cakes for us to take away.

There was a wide choice of teas to choose from. The tea was of good strength and stayed nice and hot. There was plenty enough for several cups each. We were offered a refill.

We revisited The Folly Tea Rooms in Holt in February 2016. We received a different selection of cakes and sandwiches but the quality and quantity of delicious items was the same as on our first visit. And, for the second time, we were beaten by the tea and had to take some home for later!

We will definitely be returning whenever we are in the area!!
